LEGISLATIVE NEWS & INFO

ACTION CENTER

Ohio's public transit systems are facing severe funding cuts due to decisions made by the state and federal governments.

In Ohio, the loss of local sales tax revenue generated from health care services provided by Medicaid Managed Care Organizations will erase more than $38 million in funding for transit annually beginning in 2019. Read more here.

In Washington, the Trump administration has released a "skinny" budget that will reduce spending on public transit by hundreds of millions of dollars. The cuts will eliminate the Federal Transit Administration's New Starts program that funds capital projects and slash TIGER grants, which have been used to plan and construct transit projects across Ohio, by a half-billion dollars. Read more here.

Thanks for participating in OPTA's drive to ensure the future of public transit in Ohio

OPTA is asking the members of the General Assembly to work with us to find a way to replace the millions in MCO sales tax dollars transit will lose beginning in 2019 and to provide affected systems with additional "bridge" funding that will enable them to avoid service cuts and fare increases while a solution is developed and implemented.

You can help us deliver the message by signing our online petition or by contacting the governor and your state legislators directly via phone or email. To look up and contact your legislator click here.

Thanks for participating in OPTA's drive to ensure the future of public transit in Ohio

OPTA, the American Public Transit Association, other state associations, and public interest groups are asking the Trump Administration and Congress to reject the steep cuts called for in the "skinny" federal budget outline, to appropriate the additional funding needed to ensure that systems across the country can meet the ever-growing demand for transit service, and to invest in a much-needed and long overdue infrastructure revitalization program that will strengthen public transit and create millions of good paying jobs.

Send a loud and clear message to D.C. by signing our online petition or by contacting federal officials directly via phone or email. To look up and contact your member of Congress click here.  Contact Senator Brown here, Senator Portman here, and President Trump here.
